According to the 17th Century diaries of Sir John Oglander, the Governor of the Isle of Wight would donate 5 guineas for the purchase of a bull to be tethered to the ring and ‘baited’ (by
sporting dogs) after which it was butchered and the joints of beef given to the poor of the town.
