BTT 1169-5-5 – Text of resolution set to oppose serving of beer at Peace Celebrations servicemen’s Great Tea 1919
Transcription of BTT 1169-5-3 follows:
The Committee of the Brading United Methodist Band of Hope Society very much regret to hear that a resolution has been passed by the Committee appointed to make the necessary arrangements for a Great Tea to be provided for the Soldiers Sailors and Airmen who has been doing their duty for their Country during the War, that Intoxicating Drinks are to be supplied. After Public Statements has been made by the Prime Minister Mr Lloyd George that Intoxicating Drink has been the means of prolonging the War for several months and has been the Greatest Enemy the Nation has had to fight against. The Band of Hope Committee therefore earnestly appeal to the Committee to reconsider their decision and that Non-Intoxicating Drinks be supplied.
Please refer also to BTT 1169-5-1 for final arrangements of Tea Committee. At a meeting of the General Committee on 4th July, the proposal to not serve beer was defeated by a show of hands, 5 for and 16 against (refer to BTT 1170-1 Minute Book).
